Open House Recap - February 2020

Citizens had their first look at the Naval Station Norfolk Transit Corridor Project at two open house events on Wednesday, February 19 and Thursday, February 20, 2020. Hampton Roads Transit hosted the events at the Delta Hotel and the Mary D. Pretlow Library.

More than 80 people attended to learn more about the project, including options for high capacity transit, the project purpose, and initial alignment alternatives. The open house offered a great deal of background information, as well as interactive exercises including a map where attendees could identify places they find easy or difficult to travel to today via walking, biking, transit and/or scooters.

At the Alignments station, attendees were asked to examine the different options for where the high-speed transit service would begin and end and the different route options that would result. They provided feedback on the pros and cons of connecting to the Tide at either the Military Highway or Newtown Road station.

At the northern end, participants weighed the benefits and drawbacks of connecting to the Naval Base via the Main Gate versus Gate 4. Attendees were also asked to determine the best option for connecting the transit service to Norfolk International Airport, either through a direct connection to the terminal or a shuttle transfer from the service.

Information collected from these meetings will be part of the process for moving forward with evaluation of alternatives. The project team thanks everyone who attended the meetings or provided feedback via the website.
